Sport and fitness in some form or another has always been a big part of my life whether it was rugby, running cross country, surfing or snow skiing.  After finishing high school I studied Sports coaching but somehow wound up working my way around the world as a chef for the best part of 20 years.

I first tried CrossFit training as a way to improve my own fitness in preparation for a boxing match I was training up for. But after my first session I knew my days as an amateur boxer were numbered and my future lay as a CrossFit athlete and Coach.

CrossFit offered me something very special, something I’ve probably been searching my whole life for without even knowing it. It’s tough mentally and physically but with great effort comes great reward.

I heard CrossFit founder, Greg Glassman speak at a conference and he was saying that Crossfit has an uncanny ability to help people reach their goals regardless of what that goal is. And he’s right, in the years I’ve been doing CrossFit and coaching Crossfit I have seen hundreds of people make amazing transformations in their life and it really is an honor to be a part of that. It occurred to me recently that if I could do anything with my life I would be doing exactly what I am doing, Training a fantastic bunch of CrossFitters in Brisbane, Australia.

Scotty Laird

After leaving school I picked up the tools and followed in the old man’s footsteps as a builder. A few years later I found myself at the University of Tasmania where I studied Visual communications and fine arts. I was playing Rugby Union for the Hobart Lions and Stacking on the kgs with a high carb (beer) diet.

In 2010 I moved to Brisbane to study film and television at Griffith University. I was in a lecture one afternoon when I made the decision to get in shape that decision led to my older brother and I finding Crossfit and I’ve never looked back!

I could not have pictured the positive physical and mental changes Crossfit has given me. I began coaching in 2013. I am passionate about helping people make positive changes in their lives and discover their athletic potential. Whether you are here to look better naked, keep up with your kids or both, I will give you the tools to help unleash your inner animal.

I know Crossfit is an amazing journey and it’s a journey available to anyone at all.

I used to hit the gym regularly back in the good old days, until I one night when I was there at 9pm alone and thought to myself, this is Crap!  I just couldn’t face another boring set of 8 on the leg extension machine….YAWN!  I left the gym the next day and never went back to a normal gym again.  I was turning 30 and decided to chase another dream, a Bruce Lee inspired martial arts dream.   In 1993 I started Free Style Karate and worked on getting my Black belt in that – 3 years later I achieved that goal!  No more training alone, everybody helps everybody progress and push harder to be better!  In 1996 I started training in Brazilian JiuJitsu while still doing karate.

It was through BJJ that I first heard of Crossfit and once again hit the gym, or rather the park, where my friend was pioneering Crossfit.   Here was a way to train that was actually fun!!     I liked it so much I eventually became a Trainer, everyday is different and challenging, just as a life should be!

Janine Shepherdson

I grew up on a farm so most of my activities weren’t sport related but helping out on the family farm.  I was never a sporty person however I did enjoy water skiing most weekends as my uncle had a boat.  A friend and I used to go walking around Camp Hill and always walked past a house that advertised personal training.  The day I made that phone call to Andy Jeffery was the day my life changed.

Initially, I just wanted to lose weight and look awesome for a very special milestone birthday that I was having in 2010.  Then it was just another month and I will go to Canada and I need to be fit to go skiing.  I was away for 4 weeks, came back to Brisbane and decided that CrossFit exercise was in integral part my life – and as they say “the rest is history!”.

I completed my CrossFit Level 1 trainer course in March 2011 and love my job as a full time Box Manager and Crossfit coach at AJ Crossfit.  I have experienced the changes that I know that we can make in other people’s lives.  I am so much healthier and happier since my transition from unfit to CrossFit!!   If I can change my life, so can you!

Kyle Raubenheimer

My love for health and fitness was ignited when I started training Kung Fu at the age of 15. Once I had progressed to an instructor, I found that the way of life that we encouraged was helping benefit people far more deeply than just providing self-defence. People were becoming stronger, fitter and healthier and even their demeanour changed as their self confidence and body image improved. I attended the University of Johannesburg and began studying a Sports Management degree before deciding to make the move to Australia in 2010. After a brief stint doing some MMA, I switched my focus to strength training before a friend introduced me to Crossfit.

Pushing myself to beyond my comfort zone has always been something I have enjoyed and Crossfit was the perfect outlet for that. I found myself becoming stronger, fitter, faster than ever before and my technique and form improved dramatically. Unexpectedly, I found myself become less sick less often and having a much more positive outlook on life. No matter if you are looking to be in the best shape of your life, to be a bit healthier or just looking for something to meet other people who enjoy their health and fitness, Crossfit is a great way to experience exactly that!

From as young as I can remember, I have been training. Seeking improvement to my overall physical capacity helped me in my time in the Defence Force. After I left the Defence Force, my passion for an active lifestyle, maintaining good health and challenging myself continued. That’s when I started Crossfit.

Crossfit has helped me in many ways, not just to increase my work capacity, but to be the best version of myself that I can. It didn’t take long for me to see the profound effect that it had on everyone else too. Noticing this powerful change in people’s lives I began to better understand the Crossfit methodology and adopt it by moving from a personal trainer in a commercial gym over to coaching Crossfit and haven’t looked back.

I enjoy pushing myself, however I love being able to bring out the best out in everyone when they’re in the box, whether it’s a new personal best, or if it’s just a subtle change in the conduct of a movement. Improvement is improvement.

Sally Camuglia-May

I have been a CrossFit trainer at AJ CrossFit since 2012. My pre-CrossFit journey involved success as a teenager in the world of Orienteering, being a State age champion and rep three years in a row. At that time I loved being fit and pushed myself to be the best at my sport. As life, study, work and being a grown up intervened I pulled away from competitive sport and like many people just fitted in exercise where I could. For a long time it felt like a chore that had to be endured and there was no real passion involved. As I had each of my four children I became more and more fatigued and less active, began to rely on the convenience of packaged foods and other short-cuts, and generally lost my way, struggling with fitness, my skin and my energy levels.

When AJ CrossFit sponsored our school’s fun run in 2010, thereby introducing me to CrossFit, my life and the lives of my children, changed irrevocably. CrossFit fulfils the human need for constant and varied physical and mental challenge, for community and friendship, for healthfulness and intense activity, and it is a most wonderful obsession!

It is extremely satisfying as a trainer, to bear witness to everyday people changing their lives for the better. I love watching our new members find their feet, getting used to the CrossFit way, their surprise at the community of support around them, becoming more coordinated in their movements, hearing them discussing the changes they are making to their eating habits and seeing them becoming more and more passionate about their new lifestyle.

It’s a pleasure to train and work at AJ CrossFit, where Andy has created such a positive and safe environment, where we strive to carry out his belief that “the gift of CrossFit is for everyone”.
